Latinos: visual narratives from South America
In a short novel named “El coronel no tiene quien le escriba”, the Colombian Nobel prize Gabriel García Márquez once wrote “For Europeans, South America is a man with a moustache, a guitar, and a gun”. It was 1961, and the boom of South American literature was about to happen, bringing with it not only the beauty of local cultures but also the complexities of social and political realities. The Internet was still an experimental project conducted by the United States Department of Defense and the newspaper were still only printed. More than six decades later, despite the rise of global communication and the disruptive evolution of mass media, the average European’s view of South America remains stubbornly simplistic, reduced to stereotypes that fail to capture the continent’s vast social, cultural, and geographical diversity.
Latinos is a documentary project aimed to break through the reader’s boundaries, offering a deeper look at the vibrant mosaic of South American populations. Through powerful storytelling, it delves into the daily lives of several communities, uncovering the deep connection they share with their land and history. It seeks to spark curiosity about their ancient roots, and their complex journey to reach higher life standards without losing the rich traditional heritage.
